Welcome to Zanzibar
So you’d like to visit Zanzibar? Even the name, Zanzibar, conjures up thoughts of beaches, spices and sun. Zanzibar of course offers all of these things and so much more.
Comprising over 50 islands, just a twenty minute flight from Tanzania’s main city Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar is the perfect place to discover sandy beaches, fantastic sunsets, aquamarine waters, superb diving and snorkelling.
Zanzibar has miles of white sand beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and a wide choice of beach hotels, ranging from budget to boutique, small and intimate to family friendly. You can see a list of hotels that we use on our Hotels page. And for those of you planning your honeymoon, Zanzibar is the most fantastic location - give me a ring.
The snorkelling and diving is superb on Zanzibar. Many of the beach hotels have water sports facilities and can arrange sailing expeditions and dhow cruises for honeymooners – or anyone else wanting to see Zanzibar from the ocean.
The coral reef surrounding the island of Pemba, situated just eighty kilometres from Zanzibar has a wide variety of marine life and offers many fantastic diving sights and opportunities.
The Mafia Island Marine Park, formed in 1995, can be found just off the south coast of Zanzibar. This is a spectacular place to either learn to dive or to hone your diving skills, whilst viewing over fifty species of coral and over 400 different species of fish.
You also want a destination where you can learn about and explore the past? Zanzibar has masses of history! From slave traders to spice merchants, Sultans to ivory traders, Zanzibar can show you what life was like on a spice island during the nineteenth century. Cloves were introduced to the island in the 1800’s and Zanzibar is still a major producer of this exotic spice today. Read more about Zanzibar on our About Zanzibar page.
The capital of Zanzibar, Stonetown, is known as the only remaining ancient East African town still functioning in the modern age. Stonetown is a mass of alleyways leading to Sultans Palaces and busy bazaars still rich with the scent of Zanzibar’s spices. Enjoy your time here exploring the narrow passageways leading to bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses, each attempting to outdo its neighbour in spectacular intricately carved decoration. Never far are the blue waters of Zanzibar –sitting in a rooftop restaurant enjoying a cooling drink, its easy to see why Stonetown has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
These are just some of the reasons why a visit to the exotic island of Zanzibar is so rewarding. Zanzibar is a destination in its own right and can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages as well as visited as part of a safari to Tanzania. So what are you waiting for – Zanzibar is calling you!
