Fumba Beach Lodge Hotel

Fumba Beach Lodge Hotel

Tanzania never ceases to amaze me, if I could live at Fumba I would. I know I should not have favourites and this is my view only. I think Fumba is one of the best beach lodges to stay in on Zanzibar within this price bracket.

Edwin the owner calls Fumba a lodge rather than a hotel, with its white washed cottages in well maintained tropical gardens.

The main bar, seating and dining areas are housed under a large thatched roof with open sides. Meals are usually taken on the stone terrace under umbrellas unless the weather prevents this. I suggest you try Fumba’s lobster it is absolutely delicious.

The terrace leads to an infinity pool surrounded by sun loungers and umbrellas an ideal spot for indulging in the sun. Along from the pool, is the wonderful dhow bar, a smiling Philip is always willing to put together a super Fumba special. This is a great place to enjoy a sundowner.

There are three room types: The Baobab Suites, Standard Suites and Deluxe Rooms. The Baobab and Suite Rooms are all on the ocean front the Deluxe Rooms are dotted around the gardens almost all the rooms have a sea view but not all the Deluxe Rooms face the sea.

All the rooms are large with plenty of space three of the cottages have interconnecting doors a fantastic option for families. The Suite Rooms have an upstairs seating area with scatter cushions in bright vibrant colours and sweeping views over the Indian Ocean.

The Baobab Suites add to the uniqueness of Fumba, the rooms are similar to the others except for the bathroom, which is a stroke of genius – found though shutter doors, the outside bathroom is built on wooden decking on stilts around one of the many old Baobab trees with a large stone bath and open air shower. The loo is set discreetly behind a wall (to maintain privacy). The Baobab Suites occupy a private area of beach and have wooden steps from the decking straight to the ocean.

If you fancy spoiling yourself or just ache from bumping up and down on safari roads, try out the spa there are two lovely ladies whose full body massage is definite must. The jaccuzi in the lea of the Baobab is also very special.

'Safari Blue' is the accredited Dive Centre at Fumba, their equipment is up to date and the guys are passionate about all things blue – they can arrange novice snorkel trips take you on an exploratory sail to nearby islands and the lagoon or take you on night dives.

Edwin asked me on a recent visit November 08 if there was anything I could think of to make Fumba better and the only thing I could think to say was tea in a tea pot. Being Dutch they don’t drink tea – he thought this highly amusing!!

You just need to know that there it not a long stretch of sandy beach at Fumba, instead there are a few sandy coves and inlets but it is mainly rock and coral, the beach is very safe to swim and also very private.
