Set on the northern tip of Zanzibar, the Ras Nungwi hotel was refurbished and updated during 2006/7. Built from hand-cut fossilized coral limestone and other natural materials, the 19 lodge rooms and 35 chalets which are clean and bright. The reef is nearby and at low tide it is possible to see plenty of marine life in the various exposed rock pools.

Each room has mosquito-netted four poster beds, air-conditioning and electronic safes. The lodge rooms have a garden view, the chalet rooms have a sea view and the superior deluxe chalet rooms are the closest to the seafront and feature larger bathrooms, a CD player and a few other extras! For those special occasions, why not treat yourself to the Ocean Suite, a large detached suite with an enclosed private garden, a plunge pool, terrace and large living area.

Food at Ras Nungwi is taken very seriously. Where possible local organic products are used within the restaurant and the food is a mixture of local and international. The bar stocks a good range of South African wines and stays open late!

The hotel’s facilities are good, ranging from fresh water swimming pool to a Spa, Should you feel energetic, there is a tennis court and the hotel also has an on-site water sports centre. Scuba diving, snorkelling, water-skiing and kayaking are all available here. A 15 minute walk will bring you to Nungwi village where you will find some restaurants and bars. The village is also home to a turtle sanctuary.

Ras Nungwi offers its visitors a balance between a smaller guest house and a boutique-type hotel and is ideal for those guests wanting to be nearby to some local life.
